Why Teach?

When I was in school, I never once dreamed of being a teacher. There were no shiny red apples, chalkboards, or endless nights of grading anywhere in my imagination, even though everyone told me I should be a teacher. So when I entered college and had my dreams of being an artist shattered, I decided to become an English teacher since everyone thought I should do that. It was the best decision I ever made, for it led to a life so full of joy and satisfaction, that I could never have dreamed this up. Why I teach is encapsulated below in an excerpt from my book, No More Free Days.  I hope it gives you an insight into the best job in the world...

My Favorite Quotes About Teaching:

"I like a teacher who gives you something to take home to think about besides homework." -Edith Ann

"You can teach a student a lesson for a day, but if you can teach him to learn by creating curiosity, he will continue the learning process as long as he lives." -Clay P. Bedford

"To learn and never be filled, is wisdom; to teach and never be weary, is love."

"A good teacher is like a candle--it consumes itself to light the way for others."

"Teachers, I believe, are the most responsible and important members of society because their professional efforts affect the fate of the earth." -Helen Caldicott

I've come to the frightening conclusion that I am the decisive element in the classroom. It's my daily mood that makes the weather. As a teacher, I possess a tremendous power to make a child's life miserable or joyous. I can be a tool of torture or an instrument of inspiration. I can humiliate or humor, hurt or heal. In all situations, it is my response that decides whether a crisis will be escalated or de-escalated and a child humanized or de-humanized.” -Dr. Haim Ginott
